APS participated in Petaling Utama MSSD Track and Field Championship

The school’s Track and Field team exceeded everyone’s expectations at this year’s Petaling Utama MSSD Track and Field Championship. (Wednesday 1 April 2015)

The event, which took place from 23-27 March at Stadium MBPJ, garnered one Gold, two Bronze and 13 points for the school in overall achievements. We were placed 13th in the district for points collection and 14th in medals collection. With the current crop of amazing talents, the school is set for greater achievements in 2016!

Below are details of the team’s achievements:

1. GOLD medal in P2 Shot Put – Nor Aida (two years in a row!)

2. BRONZE medal in P2 100m – Hong Jia Lin (She is also selected to represent Petaling Utama for the MSSS)

3. BRONZE medal in P1 4x100m – Nicole Leana, Nor Natasya, Nisa Humaira & Nurul Fatihah

4. 4th place in L1 Long Jump – Mahmud Hefdzi

5. 4th place in L1 4x100m – Mahmud Hefdzi, Zyan Zafri, Emir Syauqey, Muhammad Fahim & Emil Shah

6. 4th place in P2 4x100m – Hong Jia Lin, Adlin Athirah, Dania Husna & Hamada Sita

7. 4th place in P3 4x100m – Nur Aisya, Farisa Nayli, Nur Ilani & Nur Erina (APIS),

8. 5th place in P1 200m – Nicole Leana

9. 6th place in P1 100m – Nicole Leana

10. 6th place in P2 200m – Nur Erina (APIS)

11. 6th place in L1 400m – Zyan Zafri

12. 6th place in L3 4x100m – Ahmad Raphael, Brandon Tan, Wan Afiq & Joshua Mark (APIS)

13. Qualified to the P1 100m Final (Nor Natasya), P2 100m Final (Adlin Athirah), L1 400m Final (Shahir Faiz), P1 400m Final (Nurul Fatihah) and P2 200m Final (Nur Erina – APIS)

Year 11 Education Trip to KLCC

On the 12th of February 2015, the Year 11s of Asia Pacific International School, that takes English as a Second Language, had a trip to KLCC. (Thursday 12 February 2015)

As a glorious yet educational day goes by, we end up at the famous water fountain outside the shopping complex and that’s where I learned how to interact and bond with people better as our mission suggested, especially with my group members.

When interviewing people that walk around either the British Council or inside the shopping centre about English as a language and what it meant to them, we would need chemistry in our group to not scare the people that we are interviewing away but somehow make the topic interesting enough for them to stay and with my group we progressively worked on our chemistry as a group to talk to a broader society and have a variety of people giving their opinions on English and how it affects them. At the end of the day, we have become better at communicating with our fellow friends and teachers and are better at communicating skills because of this trip.

We had fun being around each other during the trip. We walked around KLCC together and had been exchanging stories to each other. This made us to know each other better.

Besides that, we went to a famous bookstore in KLCC. We had also found some words that we had never seen before. We took it as an oppurtunity to take down the words that we did not recognize, and understand more about the world. We also took pictures at a famous fountain near British Council as a group.Finally was our Vocabulary Activity at Kinokuniya bookstation. We had a lot of fun and did not want the day to end.

I have to be honest to say that book activity at Kinokuniya was indeed challenging.Each person had to find at least 25 unknown words within 30 minutes.I think it’s great – we are now rich in vocabulary!

APIS Swimming Gala 2014

On Friday 10 December 2014 we held our second APIS Swimming Gala at the school pool. The primary students took part in the 25-metre kicking-with-noodles and boards event. The secondary students were involved in 50-metre races, breast stroke and free style. (Wednesday 11 February 2015)

Congratulations as well as medals to the winners, and well done all the students who performed on the day and gave us great effort and entertainment. All students had great fun and showed good sportsmanship during the events.

All the APIS teachers had roles to play in marshalling students, timing, record keeping and prize distribution. Thank you to teachers, students and parents for your support and for making the gala highly successful. It really does help to have parents’ support, cheering and motivating the swimmers to do well.

Deepavali

Students of Classes 6A and 6B, and 2B and 2G, helped Art teacher Ms Joanne to create Rangoli patterns for Deepavali in October 2014. (Wednesday 26 November 2014)

The Year 6 students learned how to dye rice in suitable bright colours, and laid the rice to on Ms Joanne’s design of a peacock.

Classes 2B and 2G also took part in making the bright flower patterns which flanked the peacock design.

The Rangoli designs were set out on the floor in the foyer of APIS.

National Maths Marathon

Year 11

On 1st October 2014, six students from Year 11: Joey, Evanthe, Mei, Syafiq, Sabrina and myself took part in the National Maths Marathon (NMM) which was held in HELP Academy, Damansara Heights. We were accompanied by Mr. Alvin and two of our classmates Zainab and Reizo.

We departed from school at 8.40am and reached the venue at around 9.30am. We then registered our names to get our play number which was NOO37 and NOO36.

At 10.30am sharp, we were told to gather in the auditorium room along with competitors from other schools. There, we were briefed about what NMM is about and when and why it started. The rules and regulations during the test were presented too.

After that, all of the competitors were divided into 3 teams (Player 1, 2 and 3) which were then taken to the examination hall to take the test. The test took about 40 minutes. After that, we had a lunch break.

A while later, the six of us entered the Curie Lab to learn about 3D Augmented Reality (AR) in Science. AR can be defined as the interaction of superimposed graphics, audio and video that develops the understanding of science and the real world environment that is displayed in real-time.

We then proceed back to the auditorium hall for our results. Sadly, our team did not make it to the top three. The teams that did were invited on to the stage to take the final quiz to fight for 1st place, 1st runner-up and 2nd runner-up.

Finally, the prizes were given to the winners. We then head back to school around 4pm. Overall, it was a good experience for me.

National Maths Competition – A Personal Experience

The six of the team members; Batrisyia, Syafiq, Mei, Trista, Joey and I, as well as two spectators, gathered at the cafeteria to wait for our van to arrive. We all felt a wave of anxiety wave over us as we stepped out and saw the other schools (or rather, our fellow competitors) who had been gathered at the place.

 

After walking through several corridors around the seemingly large area, we finally arrived at the entrance to the auditorium where we – along with Mr Alvin – took a group photo. We were then led to the auditorium, which was a large hall with red seats placed encircled towards the centre stage. It was very similar to that of a Greek theatre. The seats were mostly filled with students of all race and gender, coming from every state all over the Western Peninsular. There, a hostess talked us through the history of Malaysia’s National Maths Competition, (it has been going on for several years) and the prizes (the top prize was about RM3000, along with three scholarships for each member of the team!). It was then the time for us to disperse to take the test.

As all the Team Member No.1s in each team left for their exam rooms (for our school they were Batrisyia and Mei), and then all the Team Member No.2s (Syafiq and Evanthe), the sense of fear and anxiety creeped up over me. I faced it by telling myself that it wouldn’t do badly. I went with Joey (my fellow Team Member No.3) out of the auditorium and to our exam room. We were to do the IQ test, which relied on our logic for the most part. Team Member No.1s were to do the Syllabus test, and as for the Team Member No.2s; Sudoku.

There were twenty of us there. I assumed the other twenty Team Member No.3s must have been in a different room. We were given our papers, which were slimmer than I had expected. There were 40 questions: 20 were multiple choice and the other 20 were to be written in a sentence. With a nervous gaze at the paper, I only hoped my mind would think as logically as possible for the test.

We were asked to begin. The first question wasn’t too bad, but then I got to the next few questions and… Wow. Trying to figure out a structure for solving each question didn’t fail to stretch my brain, much less when it came to actually solving the questions. But nevertheless, Joey and I tried our hardest.

The test ended sooner than I had expected. With a brain going overdrive doing extreme mathematical calculations mixed with the complexity of simple logic, I cooled down when the teachers came to collect our papers. Following that was lunch, which they had kindly provided, and afterwards we were scheduled for a visit at the lab.

There at the lab, we were introduced to incredible new holographic technology, unlocked in the palm of our hands. We were told to open an app on the iPad that would put it on camera view, scan a code, and point the device at a picture of an air con diagram. What popped out on the display was the same diagram but 3-D and holographic. Evanthe reacted dramatically and did more so when the instructor tapped the hologram. It was brought to life! We could see the particles zooming in and out in a cycle. All of us were pretty fascinated.

We looked through other displays: one I saw was of a glucose molecule, and another was a fossil. You could easily interact with the hologram by: moving it around the screen, modifying the size, spinning it round in circles, etc. It was like seeing the future.

The final round of the competition was yet to begin. We were seated – once again – at the auditorium, where a man who specialized in Maths gave a speech about Maths itself, and his experience as a tutor. Afterwards, other information about considering A-Levels with HELP was given, the holographic technology was further explained, and then finally we were told which three teams would be going into the final round.

I was curious as to who would get through and what questions would be answered. We weren’t too disappointed when it was revealed we weren’t part of the top three teams. I still spectated and focused on each question like I was still part of the game. The questions appeared on a projector and were read out. The rules were simple: Find the answer, write it on the whiteboard given, hold it up when the bell rings, and if it is right, a point goes to your team. There were 20 questions.

Some questions were simple; I could easily discuss them with some classmates. Other questions had us all baffled. They all had a part of our syllabus- just taken to the next level. After some incredibly difficult questions which the teams had all guessed right, we clapped along with the audience. Their intellect for Maths was quite impressive.

The competition was over. The winning team had won by one mere point. Prizes were given, applauds were blaring through the auditorium, and then it was time to go. I left with a lasting, and satisfied feeling. Sure, we didn’t win anything, but what really mattered was taking part and having a fun experience together, with your schoolmates. Taking those IQ tests opened up my mind and put my brain to its full potential; a new challenge for not just me, but for everyone else who took part. And what’s more, we were allowed to go out to Starbucks while waiting for the van, which made the whole thing truly worth it!
